Drinking fountains are provided at engineering projects and recreational parks for visitors' convenience. This one was donated by the labor unions associated in the Tennessee Valley Workers' Council as a memorial to a labor relations official of the Authority after his death. The bronze dedication placque carries the favorite stanza of the deceased which reads as follows: "Mourn not the dead who in the cool earth lie, Dust unto dust, The calm sweet earth that mothers all who die, As all men must, But rather mourn the apathetic throng, The cowed and the meek, Who know the world's great anguish and its wrong, And dare not speak."

Recreational structures. Big Ridge Lake. Diving tower, beach and bath house may be seen in the background. This forty-five acre body of water has proved an attractive recreation spot for thousands of visitors since it was first opened to the public in May 1934. Encircled by the 3,500 acres of wooded hills in Big Ridge Park, the resort is provided with a boathouse, bath house, a public lodge, nineteen modern vacation cabins and a beach with a specially constructed pool for children. Located on the eastern boundary of Norris reservoir about twenty-five miles northeast of Knoxville, Tennessee, the lake was formed by constuction of a small dam across one of the arms of the reservoir. This recreation area and the 3,800 acre Noris Park near Norris Dam were developed by the National Park Service and the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) in cooperation with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA). This is one of many comparable parks on TVA reservoirs, most of which are in use and greatly enjoyed by tourists as well as residents of the surrounding area who previously had few, if any, outdoor opportunites for ourtdoor sport and recreation. The completion of other recreational parks has been prevented by the war

Roof is carried by rigid steel arches which spring from crane rail level; steel purlins, exposed precast concrete slab. Windows of hall are glass brick for insulation. Translucent plastic discs suspended from standard highboy lighting units conceal view or direct reflection of filaments and reflect spill light onto ceiling, thus generally brightening the space. Floor is ceramic tile; walls, glazed structural tile up to crame rail, exposed concrete above

Lodge in Norris Park. This is one of the TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) outdoor recreational resorts developed by the TVA in cooperation with the National Park Service and the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) of Norris Lake. The lodge contains facilities for dining and dancing and has a beautiful view of the lake from dining terrace. The park is developed in a rustic style native to the surrounding territory principally because the CCC program, which needed such opportunites, could furnish only low-skilled labor and practically no materials but those which could be procured by enrollees from local resources, such as timber and stone

This is a partial view of the living room showing the dinette corner with its collapsible table and chairs. The other end of the living room, not shown here, contains a studio couch which sleeps two. In addition, the trailer house contains a fully equipped kitchenette, a bedroom with built-in double bed and a large amount of storage space, and a bathroom. Walls are of plywood in natural finish, ceiling is plywood painted white, floor is plywood covered with inlaid linoleum. The square panel in the center of the ceiling is a ventilator which can be cranked open in summer. All windows are of the sliding type to occupy minimum space and to minimize the use of critical hardware

Dams under construction. Watts Bar Dam, shown here under construction, has a semi-outdoors type powerhouse with an enormous gantry crane (to the right of the picture) for installation and removal of units. The project is further distinguished by a control building which is entirely removed from the hydro plant, being located some 120 feet higher on top of a steep cliff and with direct connection to the switchyard behind. The windowless left wing of the control building houses the control room; the tower-like structure in the back accomodates air conditioning, restrooms, etc. The glass wall, upper level, contains the reception room with a broad semi-circular overlook terrace, the story below the terrace devoted to offices

Dams under construction. The operation building for the navigation lock at Watts Bar has been completed ahead of the rest of the project to permit the passage of river transport during construction. The left wing contains control machinery on the first floor and the commanding officer's work space on the second. The center of the upper level is a sheltered observation space for visitors who are received and accommodated in the right wing of the structure, and for access to the right end of the roof. All lock operation buildings are designed for maximum view of the lock chamber and the up- and downriver approaches by the operators and the public

Norris Dam and powerhouse. Elevator penthouse atop dam which also serves as flagpole base. Elevator serves various levels of operating machinery inside dam. Top of dam is developed as roadway with sidewalks. Note handrail projecting toward sidewalk and toe space in parapet to make enjoyment of view more comfortable. Handrail brackets are hollow and contain lights which illuminate the roadway but avoid glare by the use of reflectors and directional lenses

This photograph shows how the two halves of a trailer house, delivered individually, are assembled by simply rolling them together on previously prepared foundations which consist of a few posts driven into the ground connected by planks upon which the house halves roll by means of small wooden wheels. Each half is light enough to be towed behind a 34 ton truck or passenger car. They come fully equipped with all essential furniture and equipment, either built-in or stored inside during transport. They are connected to each other by a few bolts, while the roof sections meet in ridges over which a common cap is laid. The whole operation may take between one and three hours, including connection to previously prepared utilities. The section or halves measure 26' x 7'9," thus permitting highway transportation without special permits. Any number of sections can be combined. Two- and three-bedroom houses. Recreation buildings, bath houses, and even very large barracks, have been constructed by TVA (Tennessee Valley Authority) on the same general plans but using more sections
