description

Summary

Print shows a trompe-l'oeil presentation of many French revolutionary assignats in various demoninations, issued between 1789 and 1795, with a full-length portrait of an old man, possibly a beggar, facing left, wearing tattered clothing, holding a hat and leaning on a staff. The assignat in the lower right corner labeled "Assignat de cinquante Livres" appears to be signed: "Galteaux inv." and "A. Tardieu sc."

Possibly engraved by Joseph Hunin at Mechelen, Belgium.
Trimmed to within plate mark.
Paper is watermarked, but difficult to distinguish.
