Summary

PACIFIC OCEAN (Nov. 09, 2010) Sailors assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76) and crew members of Carnival cruise ship C/V Splendor unload pallets of food on the weather deck of the cruise ship during an emergency vertical replenishment. Ronald Reagan was diverted from its training maneuvers at the direction of Commander, U.S. Third Fleet, and at the request of the U.S. Coast Guard, to a position near the Carnival cruise ship C/V Splendor. Ronald Reagan is facilitating the delivery of 4,500 pounds of supplies to CV Splendor after the cruise ship became stranded 150 nautical miles southwest of San Diego early Monday. In the United States Navy, these consist of ships commissioned with hull classification symbols CV (aircraft carrier), CVA (attack aircraft carrier), CVB (large aircraft carrier), CVL (light aircraft carrier), CVN (aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion) and CVAN (attack aircraft carrier (nuclear propulsion). The first aircraft carrier commissioned into the United States Navy was USS Langley (CV-1) on 20 March 1922.
