Karl Mediz (1868-1945) was an Austrian painter known for his expressionist and symbolist works. He was born in Innsbruck, Austria and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna under Christian Griepenkerl and August Eisenmenger. Mediz's early works were influenced by the Art Nouveau style, but later he turned to expressionism and symbolism. His paintings often featured mystical and dreamlike themes, and he frequently depicted allegorical and mythological figures. Mediz was also interested in exploring the psychological and emotional states of his subjects, and his works often express a sense of tension and inner turmoil. During his lifetime, Mediz was well-regarded in Austria and Germany, and his works were exhibited widely. However, his reputation suffered after the rise of the Nazi party, and he was forced to flee Austria in 1938. He spent the rest of his life in Switzerland, where he continued to paint until his death in 1945. Today, Mediz's works can be found in museums and private collections around the world, including the Leopold Museum in Vienna and the Neue Pinakothek in Munich.
