description

Summary

“Lipum,” is the Chinuk Wawa word for “apple.” It is pronounced “lee-poom.” The “p” in this word should sound somewhere between an English “p” sound and an English “b” sound.

This photograph comes from the reconstructed apple orchard located to the west of Fort Vancouver, but undoubtedly the most famous apple tree in Vancouver is the Old Apple Tree, located in Old Apple Tree Park. The apple tree in this park, managed by the City of Vancouver, was likely planted by a Hudson’s Bay Company employee around the year 1826, and it still survives today. The Old Apple Tree sits within the heart of an area that was once the site of the fort’s multicultural Village, where many of the fort’s employees lived with their families. Old Apple Tree Park is easily accessible from Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. Learn more about visiting the tree at https://www.cityofvancouver.us/parksrec/page/old-apple-tree-park
