Impeachment committee in the U.S. House of Representatives, Lowell National Historical Park, 2016.
Summary
Exact date unknown. These men belonged to the impeachment committee in the U.S. House of Representatives. Benjamin Butler, President Johnson's fiercest opponent and later Governor of Massachusetts and presidential candidate for the Greenback Party, is seated at left. In the middle, back row is another congressman with local-to-Lowell ties: George Boutwell, Governor of Massachusetts from 1851 to 1853. His earliest job was as a clerk and shopkeeper in Groton, Massachusetts, where he also studied law with an attorney whose office was above the store where he worked.
