Summary
Naval Historical Center, Washington, D.C. Cover art of the new book Cushing, The Navys First Seal by Naval Historical Center (NHC) historian Dr. Robert J. Schneller Jr. William Barker Cushing (1842-74) was one of the most daring men in American Naval history. As a Union Naval officer Cushing excelled at raids behind enemy lines, fighting all manner of rebel forces from regulars to guerrillas. These actions, similar to those performed by modern Navy SEALs (Sea, Air, and Land), earned the twenty-two year old Cushing, four commendations from the Navy Department and the thanks of Congress and President Abraham Lincoln by the end of the Civil War.
