Black widow spider (Latrodectus), Little River Canyon National Preserve, 2015.

description

Summary

This female black widow spider lived at the preserve for months and was very protective of her egg case (as any parent would be!) The female black widow has unusually large venom glands and her bite can be particularly harmful to humans; however, contrary to popular belief, Latrodectus bites are rarely fatal. Just keep your distance.
