c City, October, 1912.^ The infant was bottle fedfrom birth. He was given condensed milk the first month and later, for a period ofseven months, received Bordens malted milk. He was then put on cows milk, whichdisagreed. The infant had mucous stools, which were streaked with blood. Hisgeneral development was fair, although a bronzed condition of the skin existed. Hehad the first tooth when four months old, and was able to stand on his feet severalweeks, until four weeks ago. It was then noted that he suddenly refused to stand,and that the slightest handling of the joints of his arms and legs produced severepains. A diagnosis of articular rheumatism was made. There was marked tenderness over the joints. The head perspired freely whenfood was taken. The gums were soft and tender, and had a bluish-red ridge aroundthe teeth. There was a markfid rachitic rosary,and beaded ribs on both sides, so that the diagnosis of scurvy and rickets waswarranted. The sudden onset of symptoms made the case resemble a form of infantileparalysis. When the symptoms are associated with the bleeding gums, the purplish,spongy swellings, and the bluish-black, subcutaneous ha;morrhages visible on theinside of the cheek, then the diagnosis of pseudo-paralysis associated witli scorbutusmust be made. Case II,—^A child thirteen months old was brought to me with a history of beingvery restless and having lost considerable weight. The child showed a shriveled ap-pearance of the skin; its normal elasticity was gone; the skin was dry; the thoraxwas pigeon-breasted; the arms and legs were thin; both arms and legs showed markedtenderness on the slightest motion; there was baldne
