(Dr.) Luisa Watts, 88th Diagnostics and Therapeutic Squadron pathologist, observes a histology slide during an intraoperative consultation (i.e. frozen section procedure) in the histopathology laboratory at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Medical Center, June 26, 2017. Dr. Watts reviews surgical specimens for abnormalities to form an intraoperative diagnosis that will change the surgery the patient receives. This consultation is done while the patient is anesthetized in the OR. Pathologists have 20 minutes within which to render an intraoperative diagnosis.
