theGovernment ordered the building of twoarmed vessels at Pittsburg. These werenamed the President Adams and theSenator Ross, and were launched in 1798and 1799 respectively. In 1796 Louis Phil-lippe, afterwards king of France, spent sometime in Pittsburg, with two other exiledprinces of the house of Orleans. The threeproceeded from this place to New Orleansin a skiff. It is impossible to enter into details as tothe commencement and growth of the vari-ous manufactures which have given Pitts-burg such prominence among the cities ofAmerica. A distillery was started here about1784, and during the same year the heirsof Penn sold the privilege of mining coalin the hill forming the south bank of theMonongahela, in lots extending as far as thecentre of the hill, at thirty pounds each.This tract had been purchased by theiragent for ten thousand dollars, and attachedto the manor of Pittsburg. IRON AND STEEL MANUFACTURE. PITTSBURG. 173 of iron in Western Pennsylvania went intooperation. It was built by Turnbull & Mau-rice, and stood on Jacobs creek, about fifteenmiles from its junction with the Youghio-gheny. A steam-engine was in operationhere as early as 1794, but for what purposeused is unknown. In 1795 a small estab-lishment for the manufacture of window-gla.ss was started. In 1796 General OHaracommenced the shipment of salt from theOnondaga works, in New York, to this place,by way of the lakes and the Allegheny river,and succeeded in building up an importanttrade, which continued until the Kanawhasalt came into competition, about 1810, andfinally the works on the Kiskiminetas andAllegheny rivers made this region a sourceof supply for the Ohio and Mississippi val-leys. A manufactory of green glasswarewent into operation in 1797, not withoutexpense to its originators, for GeneralOHara, one of its principal owners, left amemorandum, dated in that year, stating:—To-d
