Spicebush swallowtail (Papilio troilus), Buffalo National River, 2015.
Summary
Swallowtails are unique among butterflies: they continue to flutter their wings while feeding! Not surprisingly, butterflies have many predators. Its major form of predator-avoidance is through mimicry -- both as larvae and as an adult. Larvae mimic everything from bird droppings, green snakes to even a snake's tonuge. Adults mimic unpalatable butterflies, either foul-tasting or poisonous species.
