KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Astronaut Leland Melvin signs autographs for students at Gainesville Elementary School, a NASA Explorer School in Gainesville, Ga. Melvin joined Jim Jennings, deputy associate administrator for Institutions and Asset Management at NASA Headquarters, on the visit to the school to share the new vision for space exploration with the next generation of explorers. Melvin talked about the importance of teamwork and what it takes for mission success. Also visiting was KSC Deputy Director Woodrow Whitlow Jr., who talked with students about our destiny as explorers, NASA’s stepping stone approach to exploring Earth, the Moon, Mars and beyond, how space impacts our lives, and how people and machines rely on each other in space. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – The launch gantry is rolled back to reveal NASA's Orion spacecraft mounted atop a United Launch Alliance Delta IV Heavy rocket at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station's Space Launch Complex 37. An overhead crane is positioned on the nose fairing covering the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite (TDRS-H) in order to lift it up the tower at Launch Pad 36A, Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. It will be mated with the Atlas IIA/Centaur rocket, which is already stacked, for launch on June 29. The satellite will augment the TDRS system’s existing Sand Ku-band frequencies by adding Ka-band capability. TDRS will serve as the sole means of continuous, high-data-rate communication with the Space Shuttle, with the International Space Station upon its completion, and with dozens of unmanned scientific satellites in low earth orbit KSC00pp0761

ED10-0115-18 In this long-exposure image, the 2.5-meter infrared telescope peers out at a starry sky from its cavity in the rear fuselage of NASA's highly modified Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy Boeing 747SP during nighttime line operations testing. The line operations tests at the Dryden Aircraft Operations Facility in Palmdale, Calif., enable the SOFIA aircraft, telescope, and FORCAST teams to prepare for the flying observatory's upcoming 'first light' science flights.
