Ferdinand Bol was a Dutch painter born in Dordrecht. He was a pupil of Rembrandt and became one of the leading portrait painters of his day. Bol's work is characterised by his use of rich colours and dramatic lighting, and he is known for his skilful depiction of the human form. In addition to portraits, Bol also painted historical and biblical scenes. He was very successful during his lifetime and his work is still highly regarded today. Ferdinand Bol died in 1680, leaving behind a legacy of stunning paintings that continue to be admired by art lovers around the world.
