He describes the Johnston mercury interrupter asfollows : The interrupter consists of an inclined shaft at the lower end ofwhich is a peculiar shaped blade, alternately dipping into a pool of mer-cury. This shaft is rotated by means of a motor to which a speed con-trol is attached. The containing case is of heavy cast iron, and the top isscrewed down and insulated from the case with a thick rubber gasket andinsulated bushings. One end of the box is inclined toward the mercurypool and arranged with grooves, so that when the mercury is thrown tothe top of this incline by the action of the blade, in running back into thepool, it travels slowly over a considerable section of the cast iron andleaves any impurities that it might have contained in them. The box is arranged to be air-tight, and the pet cock is fastenedin the lid, by means of which the mercury or any other liquid can be ^Archives of the Rontgen Ray, Jan., 1901.
