Summary
For number, variety, and detail of fossil fish, few places equal ancient Fossil Lake of the Green River Formation. Mass mortalities such as this one are uncommon. These multiple deaths may have been caused by toxic algae superblooms, or sudden changes in water salinity or temperature.
