CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – Space shuttle Atlantis is transported along Kennedy Parkway at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida on its 10-mile journey to the Kennedy Visitor Complex where it will be put on public display. As part of transition and retirement of the Space Shuttle Program, Atlantis is to be displayed at Kennedy's Visitor Complex beginning in the summer of 2013. Over the course of its 26-year career, Atlantis traveled 125,935,769 miles during 307 days in space over 33 missions. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – NASA Kennedy Space Center employees, their families and members of the general public turn out in the Rocket Garden at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida for a free screening of "Forbidden Planet," hosted by Turner Classic Movies, or TCM, as part of their Classic Film Festival. Participating in a panel discussion before the movie begins are, from left, Kennedy Director Robert Cabana, NASA astronaut Mike Massimino and TCM host Ben Mankiewicz. "Forbidden Planet," starring Walter Pigeon, Anne Francis and Leslie Nielsen, was nominated for an Academy Award in 1956 for best special effects in part for its robot character, Robby. Its storyline follows astronauts sent to a planet to find out why there has been no communication from the scientists working there. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- At Kennedy Space Center's Launch Pad 39A, Gwynne Shotwell, president and chief operating officer of Space Exploration Technologies SpaceX of Hawthorne, Calif., announces that NASA has just signed a lease agreement with SpaceX for use and operation of Launch Complex 39A. SpaceX will use Launch Complex 39A for rockets such as the Falcon Heavy, currently under development. Both launch pad 39A and 39B were originally built for the Apollo/Saturn V rockets that launched American astronauts on their historic journeys to the moon and later modified to support the 30-year shuttle program. Pad 39B is now being modified by NASA to support the Space Launch System SLS rocket boosting the Orion spacecraft part of the agency’s plan to explore beyond low-Earth orbit. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- During Crew Equipment Interface Test (CEIT) activities at SPACEHAB, members of the STS-106 crew check out a Russian foot restraint, equipment that will be part of the payload on their mission to the International Space Station. Around the table are Mission Specialist Yuri I. Malenchenko (back to camera), a SPACEHAB worker, and Mission Specialists Daniel C. Burbank (at end of table) and Edward T. Lu (right). Others at KSC for the CEIT are Commander Terrence W. Wilcutt, Pilot Scott D. Altman, and Mission Specialists Boris V. Morukov and Richard A. Mastracchio. Malenchenko and Morukov represent the Russian Aviation and Space Agency. On the 11-day mission, the seven-member crew will perform support tasks on orbit, transfer supplies and prepare the living quarters in the newly arrived Zvezda Service Module for the first long-duration crew, dubbed “Expedition One,” which is due to arrive at the Station in late fall.
