STRICTURE. 417 In some cases, the deposition is affected at several points, though this is unusual. the urethra (Fig. 76) is the re- Fig. 76; Fi£ -7.t Organic stricture of suit of inflamma- tory action, caus- ing an effusion of lymph into the sub- mucous cellular tis- sue and upon the free surface of the lining membrane. After some time, varying from a few days to several weeks, the effused fluid becomes or- ganized, and thus forms a permanent obstruction,in front of which the pas- sage is generally contracted, whilst behind it is dilated. The urethra is sometimes narrowed by a circular ring, not thicker than a thread, but more commonly the stric- ture occupies a considerable extent of surface, from a line or two to an inch or more. (Fig. 77.) Nor does it always surround the whole tube; in many cases, perhaps in most, it forms merely a segment of a circle. The bridle stricture, (Fig. 78,) as it is called, consists of a dense band of organized lymph, stretched from one side of the urethra to the other. In old cases, the contracted part is some- times very elastic, firm, almost of the consistence of carti- lage, from repeated attacks of inflammation. The most common seat of the disease is at the membranous portion, about seven inches from the external orifice ; the one next in point of frequency is at the junction of the posterior with the
