Eastern fence lizard (Sceloporus undulatus), Little River Canyon National Preserve, 2015.
Summary
Fence lizards live near trees and in dry, open forest habitat. They're more likely than other lizards to be found in trees but also live in stumps and rocky areas. They eat insects, spiders and other small animals. During mating season, look for the males to have the well-known bright blue patches on the neck and belly. Etymology: This lizard belongs to the genus Sceloporus, derived from the Greek 'skelos' meaning leg, and 'porus' meaning hole. This refers to the enlarged femoral pores found in this genus of lizards. The species name 'undulatus' is Latin for wave, referring to the transverse dark crossbards on the lizard's back.
