Patent drawing - Atari CX40 joystick being moved Public domain image

description

Summary

This diagram from the patent application shows how the Atari CX40 joystick works. The right hand image shows the stick being pressed to the right. The stick (20) sits on top of a post on the bottom of the case (32), and is held on it by the top cover (14). The hemispherical moulding in the stick (58) slides within a hole in the top (26) and rotates on the post. This pushes small fingers on the bottom of the hemisphere (63) down onto the switches (49) on the PCB (40). The other side of the hemisphere rises, where it comes into contact with mouldings on the top (72), causing them to bend (76) which produces a recentering force. The rubbery cover (22) is held in place in an indent in the top (28).
