This, then, 136 A Manual of Practical Medical Electricity may be used as a test as to the polarity of the main wires;the accumulator must be connected so that the lamps aredimmed. Another way of distinguishing the polarity ofthe wires is, keeping them well apart, to plunge them intowater into which a pinch of salt has been thrown. Gaswill be given off from both poles, but most will arise fromthe wire connected to the negative pole. Again, a pieceof moistened litmus-paper will be coloured red by thepositive pole and blue by the negative ; in doing thisexperiment both wires must be made to touch the litmus-paper. The strength of the current passing through the accumu-lator will depend upon the candle-power of the lamps andupon the number of lamps connected in parallel, and mustbe suited to the capacity of the accumulat
