FORT BRAGG, N.C. – The 82nd Airborne Division, led by the Division Commander, Maj. Gen. David Rodriguez and Division Command Sergeant Major, Command Sgt. Maj. Thomas Capel, celebrated its 89th birthday by conducting a four-mile run down Longstreet Rd Friday. The 82nd Division was activated August 25, 1917 and participated in World War I. Aug. 16, 1940 marked the first American airborne operation conducted from an aircraft while in flight by the Army Parachute Test Platoon. Less then two years later, the 82nd was redesignated as the Army's first airborne division on August 15, 1942.
