If the conjunctiva wereto pass directly from the lid to the eye, as is sometimes observed in con-sequence of disease of the conjunctiva, every movement of the eyeballwould be transmitted to the lids; and if one of the lids was held still withthe finger, the eyeball would be hampered by it in its movements. Butthe conjunctiva is present in such quantity at the fornix that the eyeis able to move in complete independence of the lids, the folds inthe region of transition being smoothed out or crumpled together, asthe case may be. Appearing through the lower fold of transition arethe extensive subjacent plexus of veins and also the white glisteningfascia. Its lax character and also its abundant blood supply render thefold of transition particularly liable to great swelling in inflammations ofthe conjunctiva. 121.
