CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – An educational news conference to explore "Why Mars Excites and Inspires Us" is under way in NASA Kennedy Space Center's Press Site auditorium in Florida during prelaunch activities for the agency’s Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) launch. At the time, she was a twelve-year-old sixth-grade student at the Sunflower Elementary school in Lenexa, Kansas. Liftoff of MSL aboard a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket from Space Launch Complex-41 on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station is planned during a launch window which extends from 10:02 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. EST on Nov. 26. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – At NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida, several scientists and researchers participate in a “Looking for Signs of Life in the Universe” news conference, Nov. 22, as part of preflight activities for the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) mission. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Dr. Woodrow Whitlow Jr., KSC deputy director, speaks to employees during Center Director Jim Kennedy’s first all-hands meeting for employees. Also on the agenda was Tim Wilson, assistant chief engineer for Shuttle, and Bill Pickavance, vice president and deputy program manager, Florida operations, United Space Alliance.. Representatives from the Shuttle program and contractor team were on hand to discuss the Columbia Accident Investigation Board report and where KSC stands in its progress toward return to flight.
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. – In the Press Site auditorium at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, NASA managers brief the media following the scrub of a launch attempt of space shuttle Discovery. From left are briefing moderator Allard Beutel, Mission Management Team Chair Mike Moses and STS-128 Launch Director Pete Nickolenko. The launch attempt was scrubbed due to a problem with a liquid hydrogen valve in the main propulsion system. Liftoff now is no earlier than 12:22 a.m. EDT on Aug. 28.The 13-day STS-128 mission will deliver more than seven tons of supplies, science racks and equipment, as well as additional environmental hardware to sustain six crew members on the International Space Station. The equipment includes a freezer to store research samples, a new sleeping compartment and the COLBERT treadmill.
