THE PROCESSION—THE ATHLETES. the Acropolis, a high hill on which were crowdedthe principal temples of Athens, the chief of whichwas the Parthenon, which had just been completedin honor of Pallas. In this procession the old menled, bearing branches of trees; next followed theyoung girls of noble families, bearing a beautifulcrocus-colored mantle, richly embroidered, for thestatue of Pallas. Next came the deputations fromallied cities, the distinguished guests, as weshould say nowadays. Then more people with of-ferings, and the athletes on horses or in chariots,which must have been left. at the foot of the stair-case, and then the great mass of the people.
