nd being the same: these spotsare still larger and rounder on the flanks as far as thepure white under wing coverts. Superciliary ridge,cheeks, and sides of the neck ash-coloured, with finebrown spots; wing coverts brown, bordered and deeplynotched in four or more indentations with white.Primaries brown: the first with the shaft white, thosewhich follow the fourth tipped and spotted with whiteon their borders. Tail white, irregularly banded withbrown; beak blackish brown above, flesh-colouredbelow at the base; legs lead grey; iris brown. The female, according to Degland, resembles themale, but is larger, with the beak longer, and thebrown spots on the abdomen elongated, and not in drojDS. My figure is from a specimen kindly sent me byMr. Tristram, and marked Constantino, Feb. 6th.,1857, therefore in winter plumage. It has also been figured by Bonaparte, Faun. Ital.;Savi, Ornith. Toscan.; Naumann, Vogel. Deutschlands,pi. 218; Gould, B. of E., pi. 304; Roux, Orn. Prov.,vol. ii, pi. 218.

Familij SCOLOPACIDuE. fBonaparte.J Genus Totanus. f Temminck.J Generic Characters.—Beak .as long as, or longer than thehead, straight, rarely curved, soft at the base, hard and solidat the point, compressed in its whole length, ending in a sharppoint; the two mandibles furrowed only at their base; theextremity of the upper mandible slightly bent upon the lowerat the point. Nostrils lateral, linear, longitudinally split inthe furrow. Legs long, slender, naked above the knee; threetoes in front and one behind; the middle toe united to theexternal one by a membrane as far as the first and sometimesthe second articulation. Often there is a rudimentary mem-brane attached to the inner toe; rarely a half web. Wingsmiddle sized; the first primary the longest. MARSH SANDPIPER. Totanus stagnatilis.
