spring moult takes place, and even in thebeginning of June we find occasionally winter feathersremaining. During the period of transition we seespeckled birds with more or less white feathers amongthe speckled ones. The spring moult comes on in this way:—Thecoloured feathers first appear on the head and neck. 220 WILLOW GROUSE. next on the back, last on the breast; and this talliesexactly with Hearnes observations in North America. My figure of this bird is that of a female shot byMr. Wheelwright from the nest in June, 1860. It istherefore in the real breeding plumage. The eggfigured was taken out of her nest at the same time. The bird has also been figured by Buffon, pi. cnl.129, (female in breeding plumage, f. 2 head of femaletaking on the breeding dress;) Boutcil, Ornith. duDauph., pi. 42, f. 1; Naumann, Vogel.
