a richer brown, theouter web having a bluish tinge, and marked withbluish white near the ends of the outer webs of thefirst six, contrasting with the dark brown tips of thefeathers; secondaries unicolorous clay brown. Throatand cheeks finely-marbled light brown and white; chestand crop, flanks, and under tail coverts barred trans-versely with brown upon a ground which is lighterthan the dirty white of the abdomen; tail above lightbrown, tipped with white, below dirty white. Beakblack brown, the nail darker glossy, and much bentdownwards, so as to produce a kind of hook; feet andlegs black brown; iris brown. The female is, according to Temminck, like the male.Its plumage generally brighter; the stria; and brownbands paler, and the white of the abdomen purer. My figure is taken from a fine specimen sent me byMr. Tristram, which came from Alexandria. It has also been figured by Bonaparte, Faun. Ital.,fiiscic 46, fig. 1, (male,) and fig. 2, (young female;) andby Gould, B. of E., pi. 373.

Xostrils a short distance from the base. Legs morebehind the centre of gravity than in the genus Anas, andthe tarsi more compressed; toes long, the two outer ones beinglarger than the tarsus; hind toe with distinct dependingmembrane.
